About Assyout
Located 109 km south of El Menia, Assyout is the largest city south of Cairo and is the main access point to the western desert oases. Very little remains of the Assyout of ancient times, when it was an important trading post at the end of the "40 Day Road," a caravan trail originating in Darfur, Sudan. Today Assyout is a modern bustling university town. The most important sites are the Monastery of the Virgin (Deir EI-Adhra) built by Empress Elena in 328 AD who believed that the Holy Family took refuge in the caves 12 km west of Assyout.
