About Damietta
Damietta is a port city situated 70 km from Port Said on the eastern branch of the Nile. Prosperous in medieval times, it was pillaged and damaged during the Crusades and later by the Mamalukes. The Ottomans later revived the town and left a few buildings worth visiting. Damietta came to life again after the opening of the Suez Canal. Today it is known as a center for manufacturing furniture. Nearby Lake El Manzala is popular with bird watchers and beachcombers.
