More about ALEXANDRIA

Alexandria is the second largest city in Egypt and only 225 km north of Cairo. Long ignored by tour operators who considered it a sleepy sea-side town, it is now becoming a popular destination again thanks to the efforts of a new city governor who decided to spare no expense in restoring Alexandria. Founded in 332 BC by Alexander the Great, who with great foresight decided to build a seaport on the Egyptian coast. During the time Cleopatra co-ruled, first with Julius Cesar and replaced at his death by Marc Anthony, Alexandria became equal to Rome in everything but the size of its army. The city was considered the center of learning in the ancient world, thanks to its famed Bibliotheca. It was also the home of the Pharos Lighthouse (one of the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World). A modern-day revival of Alexandria happened in 1990 with the reconstruction of the Bibliotheca Alexandriana. Opened with great fanfare in October 2002, the event sparked worldwide attention.
